Deformational Plagiocephaly (This program is not yet available, check back soon.)

This course was made possible by an Academy grant from the U.S. Department of Education (H235J040017).

The Certificate Program for Professional Development focusing on deformational plagiocephaly is a program designed to discuss the "epidemic" of deformational plagiocephaly and the American Academy of Pediatrics' response; a review of the literature on the management of deformational plagiocephaly; orthotic modeling of the developing skull; the identification and treatment of congenital muscular torticollis in infants; the clinical evaluation process, and procedures for the orthotic treatment of infants with deformational plagiocephaly; obtaining a positive model for craniofacial deformities; the orthotic management of infants with plagiocephaly; orthotic cranioplasty material design and considerations; an overview of craniosynostosis; and recommendations for future research.

Nonmembers: $50 per certificate program module

Prosthetic Foot/Ankle Mechanisms (4 PCE Credits)

This course was made possible by an Academy grant from the U.S. Department of Education (H235J060001).

The Certificate Program for Professional Development focusing on the Prosthetic Foot/Ankle Mechanism incorporates the findings from the April 2005 State-of-the-Science Conference with general education on the biomechanics of foot function and gait; the rationales and practice of prescribing prosthetic feet; the mechanical analysis of feet and how they are studied; how research can improve prosthetic prescriptions and patient outcomes; the relationship between prosthetic foot selection and outcomes; and future research priorities. The conference of engineers, biomechanists, prosthetists, physical therapists, and physicians set out to examine the body of scientific evidence that supports the clinical prescription and use of prosthetic foot and ankle mechanisms.

Members: $20
Nonmembers: $50 per certificate program module

Current Trends in Pediatric Orthotic Practice (7.5 PCE Credits)

The Certificate Program for Professional Development focusing on Current Trends in Pediatric Orthotic Practice addresses the Ponseti treatment method for idiopathic clubfoot; the orthotic management of the pediatric and adolescent spine; the cervical spine and halos; the management of the pediatric hip, plagiocephaly, cerebral palsy, and the lower extremity; and the lower-extremity management of spina bifida and muscular dystrophy.

Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses for Ambulation (19 PCE Credits)
This article is an excerpt from a State-of-the-Science Conference Proceedings. The conference and original printing was made possible by an Academy grant from the U.S. Department of Education (H235R050001).

This interactive online course will guide you through the results of a conference held in February 2006 and sponsored by the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists. The panel discussed the use of custom-made knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs) to assist in ambulation. They focused on custom-made devices intended for long-term use. Additionally, the panel included those devices that are incorporated into more proximal lower-limb orthoses, such as hip-knee-ankle-foot orthoses (HKAFOs) and the various reciprocating gait orthoses (RGOs). Orthoses whose primary function is not to enhance ambulation, such as fracture bracing and post-operative immobilization devices were excluded from this discussion.

Members: $109
Nonmembers: $219
