Control of the Foot/Ankle Complex: Orthotic Recommendations

By John Glancy

This 206-page soft cover book covers the biomechanical principles pertaining to equilibrium, joint alignment, and weight distribution, which the author believes apply universally to normal/abnormal conditions. His years of experience with Sports Medicine Clinics and awareness of the application of sports medicine to general orthotic practice was the impetus for writing the book. With the cost of medical care continually rising, the turn to preventive care has proved to be a viable way to reduce health costs. Historically, orthotics has not been equated with prevention. Currently, the predominant role of orthotic management is directed at maintaining the status quo of any given condition. The book suggests this may no longer be the case. It proposes a prophylactic approach to orthotic management that is analogous to orthodontic practice, i.e., the long-term use of strategically directed, continuous, low-grade forces to realign segments within the body. The book presents a comprehensive discussion of the rationale and specifics for the application of prophylactic orthotic management in general practice. For instance, when the approach is applied throughout the growth years it can have a controlling influence upon biomechanical dynamics associated with posture and join configuration. Thus, lifelong joint dysfunctions (previously thought to be unavoidable) can be prevented.
