Online Fellow Application

How to Become an Academy Fellow Achieving the Designation

The highest distinction the Academy offers is Fellow of the Academy. Fellows of the Academy are recognized with the initials FAAOP after their name. Fellow status lasts five years after which further professional requirements must be met to maintain Fellow status.

Eligibility

All Active Members with at least three years of continuous membership in the Academy are eligible to apply for fellowship.

Record of Service

All applicants for fellowship must be able to demonstrate a significant record of service and contribution to the field of prosthetics and orthotics.

Certificate Programs

All applicants are required to complete two Certificate Programs of Professional Development.

Education/Certification Requirement

Fellow candidates have three pathways in which they can meet the education/certification requirement.

All applicants must have:

  1. Attained ABC certification prior to March 2004.

  2. OR
  3. Attained ABC certification post March 2004 and have passed the ABC exam.

  4. OR
  5. Attained ABC certification post March 2004. Applicant must hold a formal degree or graduate diploma/qualification in a related or associated field that is recognized by the Academy.

Fellow Candidate Review

There is a standing committee, comprised of a group of two current Academy Fellows and chaired by a board member that reviews a candidate's qualifications and record of service to determine eligibility.

Certificate Programs Online

A few of the Certificate Programs for Professional Development are available on the Academy's Paul E. Leimkuehler Online Learning Center. Fellow candidates can complete these programs online as they work toward earning the Fellow designation.

Becoming a Fellow is More Than Just an Honor

Upon verification of your completion of the Fellow requirements and membership status, you will receive the following benefits:

  • Authorization to immediately begin using the FAAOP credential with your signature block
  • A certificate highlighting your designation as a Fellow
  • A beautiful Olympic-style medallion, encased in a shadow box, to be presented at the next Academy Annual Meeting
  • Recognition in the Academy Today
  • A 10% discount on all Academy products, education events and services
