Protecting the Patient from Product Failure and Preventing Malpractice Lawsuits – Better Material Science and Prosthetic/Orthotic Design, April 29 - May 1
This intensive three-day course explores relevant engineering design principles and their application to the selection and incorporation of components into custom prostheses and orthoses. You’ll hear about actual product failure cases and what could have been done to prevent them. Instructors will emphasize practical methods to maximize the structural integrity of prostheses and orthoses without adding excessive weight or bulk. You’ll also be privy to a detailed review of documented mechanical failures of prosthetic and orthotic devices and the resulting malpractice implications.
Emerging Technology Symposium: Scientific Principles and Clinical Application of Stance Control Orthoses, June 10 - 12
Since the concept was debuted by Horton in January 2002, stance control has been the hot topic of the orthotic community and the best-attended workshops at both the Academy and AOPA meetings. There are now three manufacturers with products in this arena and more are anticipated. The course includes a review of normal and pathological gait basics and the impact of traditional locked-knee KAFOs on energy efficiency. Even though stance control is new, there are some scientific studies that have completed preliminary results. Learn the technical specifics of each particular approach to providing a stance control orthosis, including patient demonstrations. Manufacturers will participate in the program, but this is not a sales presentation. Each attendee will be qualified to use all the options by the end of the course and have a good understanding of the advantages and limitations of each approach.
