Geographic Distribution Map
With the Academy's Geographic Map, you can review the ratios of certified practitioners to potential O&P demands for your state and elsewhere in the US. These results will establish important baseline data for future planning and identify areas where a qualified provider shortage is most acute.
While Year I activities identified the ratio of practitioners to Medicare based demands for each of the states, Year II efforts identified and studied Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA's) within the US with the greatest need for O&P services. Year II used the same base data, but by using the MSA breakdown, it allowed the analysis to cross state lines to better identify areas that may be underserved. For example small states like Delaware or Rhode Island may initially appear to be inadequately served. With the MSA analysis it was evident that care may be provided in those states by practitioners who reside in a neighboring state. The analysis by MSA confirmed the same states as being underserved while highlighting the underserved areas within each of the 50 states. Year II findings of this program were presented at the Academy's 2007 Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
Year III efforts focused on identifying the underlying attributes and characteristics which influence the differences between demand for O&P services and the ability to meet them including the expansion of the ranks of ABC certifees.
These projects have been funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education Special Demonstration Programs—Projects for Orthotic and Prosthetic Research. The purpose of this program is to provide funding in response to the Department of Education Appropriations Act for one or more projects designed to improve the quality of applied orthotic and prosthetic research and to help meet the increasing demand for provider services.
