O&P Awareness

Recruitment and Awareness Building

Spread the word - orthotics and prosthetics is a meaningful and rewarding career choice, and qualified providers are needed to keep pace with growing patient needs. More than 3.5 million Americans were using some type of orthosis in 1990, which represents a 100% increase in a single decade. And diabetes and cardiovascular disease — the two leading causes of limb loss — continue to escalate, putting millions more Americans at increased risk for amputation.

Unless more O&P students enter the pipeline now, it is estimated that by the year 2020 less than two-thirds of the population with orthotic and prosthetic needs will be served by qualified clinicians. Through the Academy's outreach efforts, we are building a highly effective grassroots network of practitioners, residents, teachers, counselors, and others to raise awareness and recruit students across the country. Learn more about the activities involved in the national recruitment and awareness campaign, by viewing a summary report.
