Steven A. Gard, PhD, JPO editor-in-chief, is the executive director of the Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center for Education & Research, Chicago, Illinois. He is on the faculty of the Northwestern University Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the Feinberg School of Medicine, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Gard is also a research health scientist with the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Department of Veterans Affairs, Chicago. His research interests focus on the functional biomechanics of human movement, particularly gait, with emphasis on the evaluation and development of prosthetic and orthotic technologies.
Hamid Bateni, PhD, is an associate professor in the Physical Therapy Program of the School of Allied Health and Communicative Disorders, College of Health and Human Sciences, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. He graduated from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 2003 with a PhD in physical and occupational therapy, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2004. Bateni’s current research focuses on prosthetic gait, postural control, and fall prediction and prevention.
Mark Geil, PhD, has degrees in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, and biomedical engineering from the Ohio State University, Columbus, where he specialized in human locomotion biomechanics. In his first faculty position at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Atlanta, he helped develop the world’s first entry-level master of science program in prosthetics and orthotics. He became director of the Georgia State University (GSU) Biomechanics Laboratory in 2004. In 2013 he was named founding director of the GSU Center for Pediatric Locomotion Sciences. Geil is a Fulbright Senior Specialist awardee and winner of the Research Award from the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists.
M. Jason Highsmith, PT, DPT, PhD, CP, FAAOP, is dual-licensed in prosthetics and physical therapy. Highsmith is associate professor at the University of South Florida, Tampa, and co-director of the university's Center for Neuromusculoskeletal Research. He also serves as assistant director of research for the VA/DoD Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE), Tampa. Highsmith currently serves on the Executive Board and as Research Council chair for the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists. Highsmith's research interests include comparative efficacy and development of prosthetic and physical therapeutic interventions for persons with limb loss.
Matthew J. Major, PhD, is a research health scientist at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. He was awarded a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Salford, Manchester, United Kingdom, in 2010. Major's primary research interests include the sensory-motor mechanisms underlying postural control in individuals with neuromuscular or musculoskeletal pathology who use assistive devices, and integration of mechanical characterization of prostheses and orthoses with numerical simulation and human subject testing to explore fundamental relationships between device properties and user performance.
Phillip M. Stevens CPO, MEd, FAAOP, is a graduate of the University of Washington Prosthetic and Orthotic program, Seattle, and holds a master's degree in allied health education and administration from the University of Houston, Texas. He is a prosthetist/orthotist with Hanger Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah. Stevens is currently co-editing the 4th edition of the Atlas of Limb Prosthetics. His varied research interests have led to publication in the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics; Prosthetics and Orthotics, International; the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery; Critical Reviews in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; Technology and Innovation; and Neurorehabilitation.
Jack E. Uellendahl, CPO, is currently a clinical specialist in prosthetics for Hanger Clinic, Phoenix, Arizona. With more than 35 years in the prosthetic profession, he has been active in prosthetic education and research, having served on the Prosthetic Education Program faculty at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, and as research consultant for the Northwestern Prosthetics Research Laboratory. Before joining Hanger, Uellendahl served as director of Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinical Services at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
