Foreword

C. Michael Schuch, CPO, FISPO

The JPO was alive and well in 1994. At our editorial meeting Dec. 2, 1994, we learned two good things about JPO for 1994.

First, once again our journal was profitable. It is nice to know that a journal dedicated to education and our body of knowledge can be self-sustaining and, rather than taxing the organizations that sponsor it, return some of the revenue to the Academy and AOPA.

Even more exciting was the news that the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics won First Place in the Professional Association Journals category in the 1994 Association Trends Publications Contest. The JPO outperformed more than 50 other journals in content and presentation to capture the top honor. Association Trends is the national weekly newspaper for association executives. Charles K. Unger, CAE, president of the O&P National Office, and Stacey L. Bell, director of publications & marketing for the National Office and managing editor of the JPO, will receive the award Jan. 24, 1995, at the Capitol Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The board members and editorial reviewers are very pleased with this news, but we are not sitting on our laurels. In an effort to further improve the quality and respect of our journal, we provided a JPO Work shop and Editorial Review Course for all board members and editorial reviewers at the National Office on December 3. Organized by board member Thomas R. Lunsford, MSE, CO. and his wife, editorial reviewer Brenda R. Lunsford, MAPT, MS. the course featured presentations and participant interaction focused on Standards and Evaluation Goals for manuscripts reporting scientific research, descriptive research. case reports and technical reports. All participants benefited and learned from the experience. Most important, all should be further qualified to review manuscripts submitted to our journal and provide quality, positive, constructive feedback to potential and/or contributing authors.

During the JPO editorial board meeting, the board firmed up the "Research Forum" schedule for future issues. We intend to double up and provide two research articles per issue by mid-1995 and throughout 1996 with the goal of completing the proposed 24 research subjects by the last issue of 1996. Concurrent with ending the series on research will be the publishing of a single monograph compiling all the research contributions from the initial dedicated issue (October 1993, Volume 5, Number 4) and the ensuing Research Forums through 1996.

Finally, look for Selected Readings from the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (Volume 1, Number 1 through Volume 4, Number 4) in spring 1995. During its recent meeting, the editorial board selected the articles that will appear in this hardbound publication.

The editorial board is working hard on behalf of the profession with the goal of quality reflection and representation of orthotics and prosthetics. We wish you all the very best for 1995!
