Foreward
C. Michael Schuch, CPO, FISPO
In the foreword of the last issue of the JP0 (Winter 1996,
Volume 8, Number 1), I discussed some of the future plans
for the JPO as determined by the JP0 editorial board at its
December 1 meeting. At that time I promised to divulge
additional plans in future issues of the journal. Following
are some of the plans initiated at the December board
meeting and further refined during a conference call in late
January.
The board plans to introduce two new forums to the
JPO; they are tentatively titled the O&P Pathology Forum
and the Outcomes Forum.
The Pathology Forum will be spearheaded by Thomas R.
Lunsford, MSE, CO, and Terrie Nolinske, PhD, OTR/L, CO.
Lunsford and Nolinske will work together to assemble topics and article guidelines to be included in a call for papers
in the Summer 1996 issue of the JP0. The Pathology Forum
will feature invited and submitted articles addressing specific pathologies with an emphasis on O&P implications.
These articles will include, but are not limited to, sections
on diagnosis, etiology, pathophysiology, pathomechanics,
O&P (and other) treatment, and prognosis. This forum is
scheduled to debut next year, following the conclusion of
the Research Forum.
The Outcomes Forum will be spearheaded by Donald G.
Shurr, CPO, PT, and Thomas M. Gavin, CO. They will likely rename the forum, possibly incorporating the words "Intervention Results" or "Efficacy Forum." Articles fit for this
forum will include case studies and case reports of actual
O&P treatments. Shurr and Gavin will work together to
create guidelines, which will be included in a call for papers
in the Summer 1996 issue of the JP0. Shurr and Gavin also will begin making a list of potential topics and authors;
articles may be solicited or freely submitted. Like the
Pathology Forum, this forum also is scheduled to debut
next year.
The board hopes these new forums will provide for both
continuing education and interesting reading. It also is
hoped they will further document the positive role O&P
healthcare providers play in the habilitation and rehabilitation of those with disease, injury, congenital deficiency and
other disabilities. We challenge JP0 readers, our colleagues,
to step forward and contribute to these forums and your
journal. As always, we are open to your thoughts and feedback.
One additional piece of news worth mentioning is the
JPO once again finished the year better than budget, contributing a nice profit margin to its sponsoring organizations, the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists
and the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association. It is
interesting to note that few professional journals actually
create a profit or surplus revenue; the JPO has met this challenge for five years in a row now. Hats off to publications
staff Stacey L. Bell, director of publications and marketing
and JPO managing editor; Christine Kalmin, associate editor; and Faye Elliott, editorial assistant.
Best Professional Regards,
