Academy Publishes New Evidence Note
“Differences in myoelectric and body-powered upper-limb prostheses”
is available on the Academy website

WASHINGTON, DC—The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) is pleased to announce the release of a new evidence note titled “Differences in myoelectric and body-powered upper-limb prostheses.”

Evidence notes are brief summaries of current evidence regarding specific health technologies. They provide a synopsis of up-to-date synthesized evidence in the form of systematic reviews or evidence reports. Evidence notes do not provide healthcare recommendations but direct clinicians, manufacturers, third-party payers, and other professionals to sources of evidence that support decision making.

The new evidence note has five key points:

  • There is little research comparing upper-limb prostheses.

  • Body-powered prostheses have demonstrated advantages in durability, training time, user feedback, and frequency of adjustment and maintenance.

  • Myoelectric prostheses have been shown to provide a cosmetic advantage, are more accepted for light intensity work, and may positively affect phantom limb pain when used actively.

  • Body-powered prosthetic control can be improved by optimizing harness and cabling systems.

  • Myoelectric prostheses can be improved with more intuitive control methods.
