This interactive on-line course will guide you through the results of the Academy's Seventh State-of-the-Science Conference (SSC): "Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses for Ambulation". The panel discussed the use of custom-made knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs) to assist in ambulation. They focused on custom-made devices intended for long-term use. Additionally, the panel included those devices that are incorporated into more proximal lower limb orthoses, such as Hip-Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses (HKAFOs) and the various reciprocating gait orthoses (RGOs). Orthoses whose primary function is not to enhance ambulation, such as fracture bracing and post-operative immobilization devices were excluded from this discussion.
