This course provides participants with an overview of deformational plagiocephaly and reviews several important studies and papers relevant to its diagnosis and treatment. Participants should acquire an understanding of the history of plagiocephaly as well as the primary clinical indicators that differentiate deformational plagiocephaly from cranial synostosis. Take a cursory look at the natural history of the disorder, then explore in more detail the possible causes and prevalence of deformational plagiocephaly as well as the possible long term effects for patients. The course highlights the clinical reports by the American Academy of Pediatrics regarding Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Sleep Position and reviews several retrospective and prospective studies that look at possible long-term effects of deformational plagiocephaly on the mental, psychosocial, and psychomotor development of children with skull deformity.
