Outcome Measures in Upper Limb Prosthetics

In the modern era of evidence-based medicine, health care providers recognize the need to measure the outcomes of the services and interventions they provide. Among the challenges facing today’s practitioner in this pursuit is a need for information regarding the available instruments, including what measures are available, which are appropriate for the patient or population of interest, and how to find them. This online course has been developed to address these needs and provide practitioners with the information they need to locate and use outcome measures suited to upper limb prosthetics.

This interactive on-line course will guide you through the results of the State-of-the-Science Conference (SSC) held in March 2009 and sponsored by the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists. The conference of medical doctors and allied health professionals was convened to examine the scientific body of knowledge related to upper limb prosthetic outcome measures

The conference of medical doctors and allied health professionals was convened to examine the scientific body of knowledge related to upper limb prosthetic outcome measures. It was the goal of the conference to examine, debate, and answer these questions:

  1. What validated instruments are available in English to measure upper limb prosthetic outcomes?
  2. What do these instruments attempt to measure as it relates to the ICF/WHO classifications?
  3. What are the relative strengths and weaknesses of current instruments?
  4. What do various interest groups want out of an outcome measure?
  5. What are the appropriate tools to be used for various applications (research, clinical, pediatric, quality of life)?
  6. In light of the literature review and the panel's discussion, what are the primary future research priorities? That is, what is missing and where do we go from here?

This course will address these questions based on the proceedings from the conference and other related materials. The online course includes sections which address measurement properties, models of health and disability, a history of pediatric upper limb outcome measures, a review of the upper limb outcome measure literature, a description of an international effort to evaluate outcome measures for upper limb prosthetics, and consensus recommendations for selecting and using outcome measures. An upper limb outcome measure toolkit is also provided to help clinicians find the recommended measures.
