Academy's JPO Named to Brandon/Hill List

The Academy’s JPO, Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics, has been added to the prestigious Brandon/Hill Selected List of Print Books and Journals in Allied Health. The list, prepared for health sciences librarians, is “intended as a selection guide to be used in a library supporting allied health education programs or allied health personnel in either an academic or healthcare setting.

"I am proud to see the JPO receiving such high accolades from the Brandon-Hill list. We are maturing both the quality and content of our journal as our field continues to mature and we hope to continue with future improvements," said Thomas M. Gavin, CO, JPO editor. The list identifies 424 books and 77 scientific journals and is published every two years.

Sable to Receive Humanitarian Award

Howard A. Sabel

The World Rehabilitation Fund will present its Howard A. Rusk Humanitarian Award to Ivan R. Sabel, CPO, chairman and CEO of Hanger Orthopedic Group at a dinner at the St. Regis Hotel in New York, November 15. Sabel’s relationship with WRF goes back to his days as a student when he graduated the BS program in P&O at NYU. He worked with the organization to develop an intervention at the rehabilitation center in South Vietnam built prior to the war. Sabel and Hanger also assisted the WRF effort in Haiti through its facility in Tallahassee. He has served on a number of advisory committees for the Fund on issues dealing with appropriate technology development and service delivery strategies for developing countries. Previous honorees of this award include former UN Secretary General U. Thant, newsman Howard K. Smith, and philanthropist Mary Lasker. Sabel is a member of the Academy.

Members to Vote on Shifting Governance Year

A ballot will be included in the October renewal invoices for Academy members asking them to vote to change the term of office for directors and officers. After studying the activity cycles of a typical Academy year, the Board is recommending a shift from the current December-November cycle to a July-June period. The shift will change the flavor of what’s reported by the president at the Annual Business Meeting to what’s actually been accomplished during the year rather than what is expected to be accomplished.

The election timing would remain the same. Currently, a slate of officers and directors is presented at the Annual Business Meeting with an opportunity for nominations from the floor. An election is held via mail ballot within 90 days thereafter. At least ten percent of the voting membership must complete and return their ballots to constitute a valid vote.

CEC-3 Presents Exciting Mix of Sessions

Members Save 34% on Registration Fees

CEC-3 combines a packed program of clinical sessions and certificate modules with the off-hours excitement of Las Vegas, November 3-4. Program brochures have been mailed and detailed information is available on the Academy website (www.oandp.org). Among the many clinical sessions are thought-provoking issues, such as how the development of world prosthetics relates to a US practice, P&O resources on the web, and etiology and prevention of skin trauma from repetitive loading. Ronald Scott, JD, PT, OCS will repeat his popular session on ethical and legal issues affecting the practitioner. In addition, there are a dozen interesting modules from the geriatric, spine, and pediatric certificate programs. (Members who complete three certificate programs are eligible for Fellow recognition and may add “FAAOP” to their credentials.) Attending this CEC is worth 14.5 PCE credits.

For complete program content details and registration information (members save 34%) visit the website at http://www.oandp.org/educ/semc/cec/cec300.htm, or call (703) 836-7118.

How Do You Want to Receive Your Academician?

During the last few months the Academy has been speeding the delivery of the newsletter to members mostly by email and fax. Only about 120 members (less than 5%) still receive their Academician via the US Postal Service. The newsletter is also available on the Academy website (www.oandp.org) along with past issues.

So how do you want to receive your newsletter? For this issue (September) all members are receiving it in printed form via the mail. If you wish to change the way you’re receiving it, we need to know. Otherwise we will assume that those receiving it by email or fax want to receive it that way. Unless we hear differently from you we will continue to send it by email to all members who have an email address listed in their member record. (If you’re unsure whether the Academy has your email address, please send us an email at Andrew Francis indicating that is how you wish to receive the Academician and we’ll make sure your record is updated.)

The Academician was increased from its quarterly publication cycle in 1997 to 10 issues annually in 1999. Electronic delivery of the newsletter saves almost $35,000 annually - that’s one of the reasons why we’ve not had to raise dues in seven years.

More than half of our members receive the Academician and other important info from the Academy via email. Make sure you are among them. Make sure your email address is in your member record. Send it to Andrew Francis.
