Upper Extremity Amputation-Overuse Syndrome-Types and Incidence

PURPOSE: determine the incidence and type of over-use syndrome in individuals with upper extremity amputations.

METHOD: Data, collected through structured Amputee Clinic over a 10-year span was analyzed for over-use syndrome. All individuals had been through a structured therapy program and returned to independence in ADL and a return to work rate of 93%.

SUMMARY: The incidence and type of over-use syndrome is presented. Discussion will also focus on level of upper extremity amputation vs. type of over-use syndrome.

CONCLUSIONS: Recommendations will be presented to enhance future prosthetic treatment therapy programs and potential life care planning for upper extremity amputees.
