Academy Launches O&P Profession’s First-Ever Evidence Database
O&P IQ provides clinical resources for orthotic and prosthetic practitioners, residents, and students.

Bethesda, MD (February 20, 2020) — The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) has announced the launch of O&P IQ—the orthotic and prosthetic profession’s first-ever evidence database. Created to assist O&P care providers in day-to-day practice and to serve as a portal for those who are interested in evidence-based research, this database is a research super tool. Clinicians can find answers to basic and complex clinical questions and support clinical decisions with evidence to get the reimbursement justification they need. Access to O&P IQ is available to Academy members only.

Academy president, Kate Allyn, CPO/LPO, FAAOP, is excited about the opportunities that will result from this newest Academy member benefit. “Orthotic and prosthetic patient care is expanding with new technology, interventions, and patient populations. Evidence-based research is the gold standard for providing the best patient care, and demand continues to grow for comprehensive access to such resources. We are excited to announce the creation of the first-ever orthotic and prosthetic evidence database, O&P IQ, to meet this need for our members.”

Intuitive search strategies have been built into O&P IQ to help Academy members find the resources they are looking for based on body segments, L-Codes, and categories of evidence. The Academy partnered with Spark Genius, a technology development company, to create this database, focusing on ease of use through all phases of development.

Brian Kaluf, BSE, CP, FAAOP, O&P IQ task force co-chair, said, “In the curation of each resource, an expert assigns the metadata elements of a body segment, category of evidence, and associated Medicare L-Codes. This allows Academy members to not only search by relevance but to also narrow their search to the types of resources that will best inform their clinical question.”

“O&P IQ is the resource for clinicians who want to be regarded as peers among healthcare providers and want to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the people they treat,” said Jared A. Howell, MS, CPO, FAAOP, O&P IQ task force co-chair. “This evidence database has been specifically developed and curated with the clinician in mind. It was developed by and for clinicians who wish to maximize their impact.”

O&PIQ was conceptualized in 2017 as a result of a member satisfaction survey. Academy members cited easy access to evidence as a top priority to help provide better patient care. Construction on the database began in 2018 and it will launch next month. Work is underway on version two of the O&P IQ database, which will include even more evidence-based resources for clinicians.
