Description

A multidisciplinary and multinational panel of subject matter experts gathered in Chicago, November 2 – 3, 2012, to conduct the Academy’s eleventh State-of-the-Science Conference. Additionally, a meeting was held with individuals from the seven companies that, at the time of the meeting, represented all manufacturers of commercially available microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees (MPKs) to discuss aspects of MPK design and classification. A summary of this meeting is included as an appendix to the Proceedings.

The Proceedings contain a systematic review of the literature published on MPKs and discussion of the following conference questions.

  • Are there differences between different types of prosthetic knees? If so, how should microprocessor knees be described and classified for purposes of clinical prescription and future research?
  • What outcomes are believed and/or expected to be associated with the use of microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees? Given these, what patient populations are believed to most benefit from the use of an MPK?
  • Are the expected outcomes consistent with those that have been observed through scientific study? If not, why might a mismatch between expected and observed outcomes exist?
  • What factors, other than the selection of a specific microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knee, should be considered when prescribing and/or evaluating the outcomes associated with use of an MPK?
  • Are there patient populations for whom microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees are more or less appropriate? In addition, are there patient populations about whom more information is needed to assess their potential candidacy as users of MPKs?
  • What are the major research priorities related to microprocessor control of the prosthetic knee joint?
