Are Split Toes and Passive Ankle Designs in the Future of Prosthetic Feet? Simulation studies of adaptation to uneven terrain (W2020-1118)
Simulation studies remove the complexity of human variability so that the mechanics of foot design can be better understood. These studies uncomplicate theories of foot design.
Join us as we review a current study that simulated the stance phase of gait on uneven terrain using finite element modeling. The following variations were included.
- Foot stiffness
- Width
- Single or multiple splits
- A linkage allowing inversion/eversion
The results explore differences in the simulated body center of mass displacements and forces acting on the proximal pylon to determine the potential impact on stability and comfort. These results can help guide prosthetic foot selection and future designs.
