Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (JPO) Recognizes Mark Geil’s Service
The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) recognizes Mark Geil, PhD, for more than a decade of dedicated service on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (JPO) and his longstanding contributions to O&P research and education.
Throughout his tenure on the JPO Editorial Board, Geil shared his expertise as a researcher, educator, and leader in support of the Journal’s mission to advance the science and clinical practice of orthotics and prosthetics. His service helped ensure the quality, scientific rigor, and clinical relevance of the research published in JPO.
“Mark and I have a long history together. Our careers in O&P research began around the same time, allowing me to follow his professional journey closely, and I have been consistently impressed by the substantial impact he has made on the profession. I hold Mark in the highest regard and deeply appreciate his steadfast, dedicated service to JPO, as well as his many thoughtful and insightful contributions as a valued member of our Editorial Board. I will truly miss collaborating with Mark in this capacity,” said Steven A. Gard, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of JPO.
Geil’s impact on the Academy and the O&P profession extends well beyond his service to JPO. In 2005, he was bestowed Honorary Membership in the Academy in recognition of his significant contributions to the profession. In 2013, he received the Academy’s prestigious Research Award for his work to advance research in orthotics and prosthetics.
A respected researcher and educator, Geil earned his PhD in biomedical engineering from The Ohio State University and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University. Over the course of his career, his work has advanced O&P research and education, including helping establish the world’s first entry-level Master of Science degree program in prosthetics and orthotics at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
“It has been a privilege and an honor to play a small part in shaping the JPO into the outstanding journal it is today. The journal is vital to the profession, distinguishing O&P among evidence-based allied healthcare disciplines. I’ve loved watching the research culture in O&P grow over my 30 years in the profession, and I’ve loved collaborating with the many fine people who make the journal great,” Geil said.
The Academy and JPO extend their sincere appreciation to Geil for his many years of service and enduring contributions to O&P research, education, and scientific literature, and wish him all the best in retirement.
