Protect the Future of O&P Education: Federal student loan access for O&P students is at risk

News,

The Academy is alerting members to a proposed federal regulation that could significantly reduce access to federal student loans for orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) students—posing a serious threat to the future O&P workforce and patient access to care.

The U.S. Department of Education has proposed redefining which programs qualify as “professional degrees” for federal loan eligibility. Under this proposal, orthotics and prosthetics would be excluded from higher loan limits, regardless of degree level or licensure requirements. If finalized, this change would create a substantial financial barrier for future O&P students and could limit who is able to enter the profession.

A 30-day public comment period is now open. The Academy is collecting member input and will submit comments directly on behalf of the profession. Comments must be submitted to the Academy by February 20, 2026.
